Rick is always looking for new ways to drive student success. Fall 2015, Rick focused on using Zoom throughout his courses and found Zoom to be useful in the following ways: 1) Recording lectures and posting archives for the all sections including the online sections. I received feedback from several online students who liked the opportunity to see (on demand) archives from the on ground section 2) Using Zoom for collaboration: (a) Virtual office hrs (b) Students working with students (c) Meetings with colleagues both from MCC as well as other institutions (Palomar, CSUSM, and SDSU). Sharing screens and seeing video makes a virtual mtg much better vs a phone call 3) Online students recording their final projects. The image above is a virtual presentation with all four group members having their webcams on. Also, below are a couple of links to student presentations. The first one was a team all together in one room. The second is a team virtually conducting the meeting. NOTE - Anyone that views the videos might just want to skip through to see the interaction, although, I thought both of these groups did well. http://youtu.be/EPsH4sT4C6M (volume is low, so you will need to crank up the volume) https://youtu.be/Srm0xyG6i18 (Good transitions between the team members, great discussion of their website starting at 12:50 in the video). Based on these successes, Rick will be submitting a Great Idea For Teaching (GIFT) proposal to the Writing Center for consideration in the next GIFT Publication. Here is a copy of the draft. Also, Spring16, Rick is going to experiment with allowing online students to participant in live classroom lectures via Zoom. Stay tuned for the results! |
